Otjiwa Volunteering: Wildlife Conservation Volunteer Plan
Introduction: The Otjiwa Collection is dedicated to the protection and conservation of endangered species and wildlife through ongoing research and hands-on conservation efforts. We are seeking passionate and dedicated volunteers to assist with various wildlife monitoring, research, and management tasks. Volunteers will play a key role in helping to protect and conserve species such as rhinos, leopards, hyenas, pangolins, and other wildlife in our care.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
Wildlife Camera Monitoring and Data Collection
Volunteers will assist in checking and maintaining fixed wildlife cameras placed throughout the reserve. This includes collecting data, analyzing photos, and recording the presence of wildlife, with a particular focus on rare and endangered species such as leopards, pangolins, and hyenas. Volunteers will ensure the cameras are functioning properly and report any issues to the research team.
Feeding and Care of Rhinos and Other Wildlife
Volunteers will help with feeding and ensuring the welfare of the rhinos and other wildlife under our care. This will involve preparing food, monitoring the animals, and assisting with basic care tasks. Volunteers will be trained in the appropriate methods for handling and interacting with these animals.
Farm and Environmental Management
Volunteers will assist with essential farm work, including water management to ensure that wildlife has access to clean water sources. This will also include fence management to maintain secure enclosures for animals, ensuring that the fences are intact and safe.
Rare Species Protection and Monitoring
Volunteers will participate in efforts to protect and monitor rarely sighted and endangered animals, including hyenas, leopards, and pangolins. This will involve monitoring animal movements, assisting with habitat restoration, and ensuring that these species are safe from poaching or other threats.
